Urban Health Plan

Urban Health Plan is a private nonprofit provider of primary and specialty healthcare that originated in the South Bronx and has expanded beyond its main site to include nine satellites, 11 school health programs, two part-time facilities and three administrative program sites.

They are committed to hiring people who live in the mostly poor and Hispanic communities that they serve. This requires them to provide extensive training, checking in on new employees after a month, three months, and six months with surveys that track progress. Every employee is paired with a mentor upon hiring, as well.

UHP provides tuition assistance, gets scholarships for staff members, pays for outside training and conferences, and provides free wellness programs on site, including cooking, parenting and fitness classes.

Many opportunities exist for advancement; UHP has nearly 900 employees, and 175 have been promoted. Examples include a woman who was hired as a medical assistant and has since become a nurse and coordinates UHP’s Center for Healthy Aging. Another employee was hired as a cleaner and became a data analyst.

Additionally, UHP hires people at a variety of ages. In 2017, they added several people to their staff who are in their fifties, sixties and seventies. They have also welcomed back employees who have retired, including a nurse practitioner and a gynecology coordinator.
