Current Programs

The Department of Health Policy & Management (HPM) conducts several professional non-degree and executive education programs which are summarized below.

The Health System Simulation

The Health System Simulation is available as a stand-alone workshop, a component of a larger program for individuals and groups working in hospitals and clinical facilities, or as part of custom HPM professional and non-degree program. It has been used as a module in leadership development programs and as training for department chairs, hospital management teams and other providers, and as a public or open workshop program for individual professionals.

Newyork-Presbyterian Leadership Education & Development for Physicians (LEAD)

In partnership with NewYork-Presbyterian (NYP) hospital, HPM delivers health policy & leadership courses to physicians selected to participate in NYP’s LEAD Academy. Physicians accepted to the LEAD Academy have been identified by the hospital as rising stars within the system and during the 18-month program participants complete modules at HPM and Columbia University Business School. HPM modules include Health Policy, Health Economics, Population Health, Healthcare Marketing, Payment Systems and Analytics & Managerial Decision-Making. Physicians complete the Health System Simulation twice – once as the program kick-off, and again at the program’s conclusion. Physicians also produce application projects with the mentorship of NYP leadership.

Young Presidents Organization: Healthcare Leadership Academy

HPM hosts members of Young Presidents Organization, Inc. (YPO) for a four-day Healthcare Leadership Academy. Developed in collaboration with YPO and HPM Professor and YPO Member Asha Saxena, the Healthcare Leadership Academy provides a unique learning experience with both immediate and long-term impact to YPO members and their organizations. Building on HPM's core expertise in Health Policy, Managerial & Organizational Behavior and Healthcare Quality, participants hear from special guest speakers including John W. Rowe, MD, Donna Lynne, DrPH, and complete a site visit to NewYork-Presbyterian's center for innovation. As a capstone to the four-day program, participants compete with their peers in a Strategic Management Case Competition.

American Chamber of Commerce-China

In collaboration with the Health Human Resources Development Center (HHRDC), the US-China Healthcare Cooperation Program (HCP), the American Chamber of Commerce-China, and the US Trade and Development Agency (USTDA), HPM hosts 30 high-level healthcare managers from China for an intensive, one or two-week training program. Participants represent a wide range of sectors in the Chinese healthcare system including hospitals, government agencies and non-profits.  Classroom sessions focus on strategic management, managerial & organizational behavior, leadership and health IT.  The curriculum provides a window into new technologies and innovation having a positive impact on the US healthcare sector and imparts best practices, and pitfalls to avoid, from around the system. Past programs have included capstones of the Health System Simulation and Case Based Learning Lab.

Behavioral Economics Masterclass

This masterclass covers a range of topics from the origins of behavioral sciences through to how recent advances in theory and practice have shifted our thinking on outcomes for organizations and society. Each section, including the fundamentals of behavioral sciences, policy development and evaluation, and all of the domains – economic, health, energy, education, workplace – cover examples of how behavioral insights are being used to address some of the most critical challenges we face. The cases and concepts presented in this course are complemented by a recently published textbook, which each participant will receive. These demonstrate the considerable value, both realized and potential, in studying as well as implementing behavioral insights into a variety of policy and management domains. Led by HPM Professor Kai Ruggeri, this 2-day masterclass is offered as part of a longer customizable professional and non-degree program, or as a stand-alone course.
