What We Do

The Department of Health Policy & Management (HPM) is home to education, research, and service programs that provide students with the skills, networks, credentials, and practical experience to obtain professional positions in a complex and changing healthcare environment. Our faculty come from a range of disciplines including business, economics, health systems, law, medicine, political science, psychology, and public health. Healthcare executives and senior health policy experts regularly join the classroom as adjunct instructors and guest lecturers, integrating current practical applications to supplement a strong academic curriculum.

Our Mission

The department’s Mission is to advance theory and practice in the healthcare industry and to produce a more equitable and more efficient health system. This mission is fulfilled through research and education focused on the development, implementation, and evaluation of health policies and the administrative functioning of health systems and organizations.

The Non-Degree Experience

HPM's professional non-degree programs deliver highly focused experiences that advance personal leadership development and enhance the current performance of healthcare organizations, non-profits and government agencies. Our programs bridge the key strategic, policy, cross-national and operational frameworks that are essential to today’s healthcare managers and executives. Current programs include: NYP Lead, REACH, the Health System Simulation, GMPHE, YPO, HCP-AmCham, as well as customizable programs based on an organization or health system’s needs.

Collaborators

HPM collaborates with healthcare organizations that are committed to the continuing education and professional development of their employees, and are willing thought-partners in the development and execution of executive education.  This audience includes organizations in a range of areas such as insurance, consulting, pharmaceuticals, financial institutions, government agencies, NGOs, non-profits, hospitals and public health systems.

HPM Customizable Programs

HPM curates programs that fit the specific educational needs of an organization. HPM offers off-the-shelf modules in the department’s areas of expertise, including Issues & Approaches in Health Policy, Healthcare Finance, Strategic Management, Leadership & Organizational Behavior and Analytics & Managerial Decision-Making.  With input from an organization, HPM combines these core areas with topic specific modules, tailored to an organization’s needs. Topics may include issues impacting the health systems, the pharmaceutical or insurance industries, managing non-profits, the shift to value-based healthcare or healthcare innovation and entrepreneurship.

All modules are led by HPM faculty, who are experts in the field and at the forefront of influencing healthcare and public health systems. These instructors impart current research and management theories that healthcare managers and executives can leverage at their organizations.

Programs can be delivered exclusively in-person, or with a mix of in-person and online synchronous or asynchronous sessions. Past program formats have included in-person, one or two week programs, with sessions running Monday through Friday, and culminating in a capstone Case-Based Learning Lab or Health System Simulation.

Situated at the Columbia University Irving Medical Center and with institutional relationships throughout the New York City health system, HPM can also arrange for site visits and guest speakers with many of the area’s top healthcare institutions.
