PopFam Faculty Member Sara Casey and Four MPH Graduates Publish Paper on Midwifery Education in the South Sudan
PopFam program RAISE (Reproductive Health Access, Information and Services in Emergencies) and International Medical Corps share results from a mixed methods assessment of the midwifery education program in 3 schools in South Sudan in the paper "Midwives are heroes of the country: Qualitative evaluation of a midwifery education program in South Sudan”, published in Frontiers in Global Women’s Health in August, 2023.
Overall, the quality of the midwifery education program appeared strong, however gaps in the program and the provision of quality care remain. The findings highlight the need to ensure sustained funding for midwifery education, as well as health system strengthening to ensure midwives can practice their skills. Continued investment in midwifery education and training is needed as midwives are critical to reduce high maternal mortality in South Sudan, and other countries similarly affected by conflict.
