Dr. Yusuf K. Hamied is considered the pioneer of generic pharmaceuticals in India and a pioneer in the global fight against HIV and AIDS through his efforts to reduce the international cost of these drugs.
The event will feature a panel and excerpts from the 2013 documentary film, Fire in the Blood, which depicts how Dr. Hamied and others campaigned to compel the world’s major pharmaceutical giants to make antiretroviral drugs available to people with HIV and AIDS as generic drugs.
Dr. Hamied is a pharmaceutical chemist, philanthropist, and chairman of Indian generics maker Cipla Ltd., the pharmaceuticals company founded by his father in 1935. He is considered the pioneer of generic pharmaceuticals in India and a pioneer in the global fight against HIV and AIDS through his efforts to reduce the international cost of these drugs. Dr. Hamied was a featured subject of a recent documentary film, Fire in the Blood (2013), which depicts how he and others campaigned to compel the world’s major pharmaceutical giants to make antiretroviral drugs available to people with HIV and AIDS as generic drugs. Dr. Hamied is a commissioner of UNAIDS, and is the recipient of lifetime achievement awards from Anacon, Express Pharma, Biospectrum and E&Y. He was CNN-IBN Indian of the Year 2012 and is an honorary fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry. He earned the Padma Bhushan from the President of India in 2005.
