The five dimensions of inclusive excellence include: 

Access and Success 

The objectives and strategies used to sustain or increase compositional diversity among faculty, staff, and students, including recruitment and retention activities for these university constituent groups. 

Access and Success Goals 

  • Continue and expand avenues to diversify the student body through recruitment and retention efforts (e.g. RISE, MOSAIC)  
  • Increase the gender, racial, and ethnic diversity of tenured faculty and tenure track roles. 
  • Enhance the research productivity of diverse faculty, including women. 
  • Provide ongoing professional growth opportunities for faculty, including those in non-tenure roles. 
  • Develop an institutionalized process to analyze diversity and experiences of staff to promote their growth and thriving. 

Climate and Intergroup Relations 

The objectives and strategies that enable an institution to create a climate that is supportive and respectful, as well as one that values differing perspectives and experiences. 

Climate and Intergroup Relations Goals 

  • Conduct periodic climate assessments at MSPH; 
  • Provide opportunities for professional learning to enhance community-building, belonging, teaching, and leadership. 

Education and Scholarship 

The objectives and strategies of providing educational opportunities for faculty, students, and staff to learn varied perspectives of domestic and international social justice and humanitarian issues impacting public health. This also includes support for scholarship and research advancing public health domestic and international social justice and humanitarian issues. 

Education and Scholarship Goals 

  • Provide opportunities for student learning to enhance knowledge of public health, health equity, systems of oppression, community needs, and cultural humility (Existing – Self, Social, and Global Awareness (SSGA), FORWARD Fellows) 

Institutional Infrastructure

The policies, resources, organizational structures, and the use of metrics and other evidence to drive intentional decision-making around inclusion, belonging, thriving, and health equity. 

Institutional Infrastructure Goals 

  • Identify policies, practices, resources, and data to drive intentional decision-making around inclusion, belonging, and thriving. (Existing – Activities of FORWARD Action Corp on Belonging & Community) 

Community Engagement 

Targeted partnerships to improve thriving and health equity outcomes for historically disenfranchised populations in the communities that surround Columbia University. This also includes opportunities to increase targeted partnerships and engagement among alumni and donors from underrepresented groups. 

Community Engagement Goals (in partnership with CHEC Executive Director) 

  • Provide opportunities to build community and a sense of belonging within MSPH 
  • Provide opportunities to serve local communities and community partners
