Renee D Goodwin, PhD, MPH focuses her research on substance use problems, mental health and related physical health problems within individuals across the lifespan and at a population level. Her current work focuses on three major unifying themes: (1) the interrelationships between mental health and tobacco use and dependence from adolescence through adulthood; (2) the intergenerational impact of mental health problems and substance use on offspring physical and mental health; (3) the relationships between mental health and chronic physical disease from the prenatal period into adulthood. Dr. Goodwin is a psychiatric epidemiologist and clinical psychologist with over 15 years of experience in leading studies focused on etiology and outcomes related to the comorbidity of substance use, addiction, psychiatric disorders and physical health problems across the lifespan. She has led grants from NIMH, NIDA, and several private foundations. Dr. Goodwin has authored or co-authored over 175 scientific publications. Her current projects include a NIDA-funded study on the epidemiology of smoking, specifically related to understand how various mental health problems may be undermining the declining smoking prevalence in the United States, especially among vulnerable populations. She is also leading an ongoing study examining mental health problems among children with asthma and allergies, and their caregivers, in an urban pediatric population.

Select Urban Health Activities

Asthma, allergies and mental health in an urban pediatric population: The objective of this pilot study is to examine the prevalence of psychological symptoms and related health concerns among pediatric asthma and allergy patients in an inner-city asthma clinic. Results of this study will be used to develop an intervention aimed at improving physical and mental health and quality of life for inner-city youth with severe asthma and allergies and their families.

Select Global Activities

Mental health and asthma among youth in Western Australia: The objective of this study is to examine the association between atopy and mental health in a birth cohort study in Western Australia, and to investigate possible mechanisms underlying these relationships, including the role of prenatal, environmental, behavioral and familial risk factors.
Anxiety disorders in the Christchurch Health and Development Study: The objective of this study is to examine the risk factors for the onset and persistence of anxiety disorders, as well as the range of associated health and social outcomes, from birth through adulthood in a birth cohort.
