Dean Linda Fried Named 2022 Notable Health Care Leader by Crain's New York Business

Crain’s New York Business has recognized Linda P. Fried, MD, MPH, Dean of Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health, as a Notable Health Care Leader in 2022. 

The Notable Leaders list recognizes healthcare experts who have made significant contributions to their organizations and communities. Fried, who is also DeLamar Professor of Public Health Practice, Professor of Epidemiology and Medicine and Senior Vice President, Columbia University Medical Center since 2008, was selected for her significant leadership accomplishments in the fields of epidemiology and geriatric medicine and for demonstrating strong mentoring and broad community involvement.

An internationally renowned scientist trained in cardiovascular and chronic disease epidemiology and geriatrics, Fried has dedicated her career to the science of healthy aging and creating a health span that matches our increased life expectancy. As co-chair of the National Academy of Medicine Global Commission on Healthy Longevity, she aims to ensure that populations globally are engaged in society while living longer lives. The Commission’s report, co-authored by Fried and launched this summer, provides a roadmap for actions to improve healthy longevity by 2050 in work, volunteering, education, social infrastructure, physical environment, and long-term care. 


Throughout the pandemic, the Columbia Mailman School has partnered with local, national, and global governments and institutions to combat the COVID-19 pandemic. Fried was awarded Columbia’s Nicholas Murray Butler Gold Medal for her work on Columbia President Bollinger’s University-wide pandemic response committee whereby she made daily recommendations and decisions on campus-wide safety as case numbers of infections rose daily. 

Recently, Fried received the Association of American Physicians’ Kober Medal, one of the highest honors in academic medicine, for her impact on the many young scientists she trained. Each year Fried honors faculty members who exhibit exceptional leadership qualities and she provides mentorship to junior faculty. 

Fried has been a guiding voice among public health deans and influencers. In spring 2022 she co-led a campaign to call on the Supreme Court to uphold Roe v. Wade. In 2021 and 2022, Fried led School celebrations of its centennial of educating generations of leaders, groundbreaking science, and delivering solutions to improve health, from understanding health effects of climate change to reducing health inequities everywhere.
