Gabriele Windgasse

Gabriele Windgasse has more than 25 years of professional experience in applied public health. She has worked as an occupational safety and health officer in Germany and as a toxicologist and program director at two state agencies in California. At the California Environmental Protection Agency and the California Health and Human Service Agency, she collaborated with communities, advocacy groups, community health workers, native tribes, local, state, and federal agencies to evaluate and address community concerns from exposures to hazardous materials, including hazardous waste sites. Her interests include community education and engagement (including citizen science, community-based participatory research, and the Protocol for Assessing Community Excellence in Environmental Health - PACE EH); children's environmental health; environmental health literacy; health equity/environmental justice; emerging public health concerns such as engineered nanomaterials; and global environmental health issues. Dr. Windgasse has taught graduate students in the Mailman School of Public Health since 1994, sharing her experience in public health practice with her students. Her current class, "Applied Environmental Public Health Science," requires students to assume different professional roles when analyzing and addressing environmental health problems. She has also served as a thesis advisor for students in the Department of Environmental Health Sciences.
