Overview
Dr. Kane is a psychiatric epidemiologist with research interests in global mental health, substance and alcohol use epidemiology, and adolescent health. He has methodological expertise in complex survey design and analysis, cohort studies and longitudinal data, measurement and psychometrics, and the design and conduct of hybrid effectiveness-implementation randomized controlled trials and quasi-experimental designs, as well as in specific content areas of adolescent health, mental health, and substance use and alcohol epidemiology. His research investigates mental health and substance use problems among populations in humanitarian settings and HIV-affected populations in low- and middle-income countries and also explores the impacts of culture and migration on mental and behavioral health among refugee and immigrant populations globally. This research program is implemented in close collaboration with academic institutions around the world, non-governmental and international organizations, and government agencies in an effort to: 1) measure the prevalence, patterns, and correlates of mental health, alcohol, and substance use problems among these populations, 2) develop and validate innovative methods for reliable and valid measurement of mental health, alcohol and substance use problems, and 3) develop, adapt, test, and sustain interventions to address these problems through randomized controlled trials and implementation science studies. He has led or contributed to research funded by NIH, CDC, WHO, USAID, International Medical Corps, UK Department for International Development, Wellcome Trust, and the United Nations and conducted in countries across the world including Zambia, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, India, Nepal, Ukraine, Armenia, Peru, Ecuador, Mexico, Guatemala, Haiti, and the United States. He currently teaches EPID 8479 Epidemiologic Methods in Global Mental Health.
