What We Do

The Collaborative brings all community members—including residents, leaders of community organizations and faith groups, and local elected officials—together at the table with Columbia Mailman School faculty, students, and staff to facilitate and achieve sustainable and equitable community engagement addressing health challenges and promoting health excellence for all members of this interwoven community.

We focus on the following:

  • Placing the ideas, concerns, and values of the local neighborhoods front and center at Columbia Mailman School
  • Assessing existing community-school public health partnerships and surfacing opportunities for further strengthening relationships
  • Maintaining an updated inventory of public-health-related programs, initiatives, and assets available in neighborhood programs and schools
  • Building and sustaining new and impactful models of community-school partnership in Harlem, Washington Heights, and Northern Manhattan
  • Leveraging the collective knowledge and resources of community leaders and the School’s researchers
  • Engaging the School’s students in research innovation, public service, knowledge sharing, and policy action
  • Strengthening the community’s capacity and infrastructure to reduce disparities and promote wellbeing
