Dr. Carlos Santos-Burgoa, Professor of Global Health and Environmental and Occupational Health and Director of Global Health Policy at George Washington University, will be presenting "Reimagine Public Health Protection" at the Annual Granville H. Sewell Distinguished Lecture.
Dr. Carlos Santos-Burgoa's career spans executive leadership, research, teaching, and policy implementation in public health across Mexico, Latin America, and global organizations. As General Director at the Mexican Ministry of Health, Dr. Santos-Burgoa established the Federal Commission for Health Risk Protection (COFEPRIS), led the non-pharmaceutical response to the Influenza A(H1N1) pandemic, and commanded major initiatives such as the Infrastructure Master Plan and the Health Promotion Operational Model as part of national health reform efforts. His research has contributed to health risk analysis, including identifying 1,3-butadiene as a human carcinogen among synthetic rubber workers—now reflected in his advisory role with the EPA’s risk assessment. He authored “Essential Health Needs in Mexico” for the Presidential COPLAMAR and founded the Health Work and Environment Institute. Recently, Dr. Santos-Burgoa advised Mexico’s General Health Council on COVID-19 policy and chemical management, launched the “Chemical World” collaborative, and designed and advocated for the implementation of an emergency response to childhood lead poisoning in Mexico.
