 Caribbean Climate and Health Responders Course: Education for Action - Second Edition

This course aims to amplify health professionals' knowledge, self-efficacy, and communication skills regarding the climate crisis. Skills which will enable participants to enhance patient care, public health practice, and serve as trusted messengers within their institutions and communities in the Caribbean region. The program fosters a dynamic community approach focused on climate and health education, advocacy, and policy, providing robust mentorship and expert support. All lectures will be delivered in English with live Spanish interpretation. Resources such as slide decks, frameworks and suggested readings will be provided to all course participants following each session. Video recordings will be available following each session for asynchronous view. Webinar 2: How Climate Change is Changing Women’s Health in LAC

Migrant women of all ages, ethnicities, cultures and backgrounds provide essential care to others globally, within and outside their families, to sustain health, well-being and comfort to their loved ones. There is a large proportion of migrants who are women, even larger than male migrants in some countries. Female migration is marked by gender risks and vulnerabilities and, at the same time, migrant women develop unique and powerful resources and resilience during transit and in host societies. Climate change has been poorly explored in its connection with migrant women´s health in LAC, and this webinar will expand evidence-based knowledge about how climate change is changing women´s health in this region. This session will explore the role of climate-driven extreme weather events on food production and supply chains, identifying vulnerable regions and communities.  Experts from the region will examine existing policies and explore potential mitigation measures, share their insights on community-driven initiatives and solutions that foster resilience and sustainability in the face of climate-induced challenges. Webinar 4: Populations on the Move: How Climate Change Affects Migrants in LAC Transient Camps

The Latin American and Caribbean sub-continent has seen a significant rise in migrants-based transient camps. This is related to multiple factors, including climate change, risks during transit and social marginalisation and exclusion upon arrival in host countries, especially amongst migrants in irregular status and living in poverty. There is growing evidence around how such camps are created and sustained over time, as well as health risks related to poor material conditions, lack of access to clean water, stigma and discrimination. In the meantime, migrants living in these camps find a way to resist and develop unique identities as they build complex social layers in their everyday activities. Research to Inform Optimization of Heat Health Early Warning Systems

Description: Extreme heat events are becoming more frequent and severe, leading to increasing numbers of deaths, hospitalizations, and illness across the globe. To address this threat to public health, countries and communities across the globe are working to implement or improve heat early warning and response systems with the goal of reducing heat-related morbidity and mortality. But there is currently insufficient research to inform optimization of heat action plans, particularly given that heat risks and appropriate adaptations can vary across locations and populations, and potentially over time.  

In this webinar, we will review: a) evidence of the growing health burden associated with days of extreme heat, b) gaps in the scientific evidence, and c) examples of how research can inform further optimization of heat early warning and response systems.

Speaker: Greg Wellenius, ScD, Professor and Director of the Boston University Center for Climate and Health and one of the CAFE leads. 

How can CAFE help with the new NIH Data Management and Sharing Plan?

Description: In January of 2023, the National Institute of Health released a new Data Management and Sharing Plan to promote sharing of scientific data and data reuse for scientific studies. Under this policy, NIH expects institutions and investigators involved in applications to: plan and budget for the managing and sharing of data, submit a DMS plan for review when applying for funding, and comply with the approved DMS Plan if funded. In this 30 minute session, we will describe what the new DMSP entails, as well as how CAFE can help. All are welcome, but we especially encourage projects funded under the CCHI.

Climate Change, Planetary Health, and Medicine

This course, offered by Harvard Medical School, will be an opportunity for practicing health professionals to learn about the mechanisms by which climate change impacts human health and how it influences diagnosis, counseling and treatment plans. It will additionally describe the impacts of climate changes on the health care delivery system itself and how health care professionals can make change to address this public health threat. The course will be organized to touch upon climate impacts on a diversity of health conditions and disease processes and will be valuable to health care providers of all fields. EUHPP Live Webinar: Climate Resilience: The Role of the Health Sector

Climate Forces on the Health and Well-being of Children on the Move in LAC | March 5, 2024

Climate change is an emerging yet understudied force on the health and well-being of international migrant children and adolescents. Over the past decade, we have seen a steady rise in the numbers of children traveling, especially unaccompanied or traveling with adults they do not know.  Social and health risks and vulnerabilities among migrant children have been recognised globally, yet the relevance of climate change as a direct and indirect driver of health outcomes is less understood. Local evidence from LAC can contribute to current global discussions around the health and protection of children on the move.

The Role of Public Health Schools in a Climate Changing World | Feb 21, 2024

Climate change poses significant health risks. Public Health professionals play a vital role, and training institutions must prepare future professionals to address climate-related health challenges effectively.
