School Launches Bioethics Dual Degree
Columbia Mailman School has inaugurated a Master of Public Health Dual-Degree Program with a Master of Science in Bioethics at Columbia University in partnership with Columbia's School of Professional Studies. The program enables students to gain cross-disciplinary training and broaden their skills and knowledge in preparing them for leadership roles in nonprofit organizations, governmental agencies, healthcare, pharmaceutical and biotech companies, hospital administration, as well as academia.
The Mailman School Master of Public Health offers students the broad systemic understanding, critical thinking skills, and leadership training needed to tackle today’s complex public health challenges. The Master of Science degree in Bioethics gives students the opportunity to address critical issues concerning the ethical, legal, and social implications of advances in healthcare and biotechnology.
Students can complete the Bioethics portion online, in-person, or through a combination of online and in-person study with options to pace their study over the course of four years. In addition, they will have affiliations with Columbia institutes and centers of both schools and be part of two global alumni networks.
“Graduates of the dual-degree program will be prepared to take on the challenges of balancing individual rights, risks and benefits with the interests of the public-at-large, and gain the knowledge and expertise to address crucial ethical issues in public health research,” said Robert Kliztman, MD, director, Master of Science in Bioethics program, and professor of Psychiatry in Sociomedical Sciences at Columbia Mailman School and the Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons. “Our students will be prepared to address vital questions that loom large in society today including: How can and should healthcare systems and policies promote justice and address inequalities? How do we as a society best promote the health of our citizens?”
