Since the Institute of Medicine defined “patient-centered care” as one of the six essential dimensions of a high-quality health system in 2001, all sorts of changes, or proposed changes, to the health care system have been described or promoted by reference to that goal. Yet most of them were designed without consulting with any actual patients, understanding their concerns or preferences, or directly addressing their needs. The development of a truly patient-centered health care system is still, at best, in its infancy, and it will take a concerted long-term effort to rescue the goal of patient-centered care from its self-proclaimed promoters.
