Using laboratory experiments, we test the impact of workaround difficulty on whether hospital nurses contribute improvement ideas in response to operational failures. We find that when it is more difficult to work around an operational failure, participants were more likely to contribute improvement ideas, but they were also more likely to use a risky workarounds associated with a 10X overdose of insulin. Our study showed that risky workarounds can be mitigated with a readily-available support person.
