Policy and Health Initiatives on Opioids and Other Substances (PHIOS)

PHIOS integrates university-wide resources and transdisciplinary expertise to rapidly capture emerging social and policy trends, and generate new knowledge toward novel solutions to the US opioid and substance use crisis.

PHIOS brings together an experienced and transdisciplinary group of investigators who would otherwise not have teamed to focus on and inform the next stage of social and substance use policies; generate the scientific groundwork to guide future community-level interventions with a special focus on children, adolescents and families affected by the opioid crisis; and translate scientific findings to policymakers and the public in an accessible and timely way.

PHIOS is based at the Columbia Mailman School of Public Health, within which it has a primary connection to the Department of Epidemiology. It is also linked to other public health departments including the Department of Health Policy and Management, the Department of Biostatistics, and the Department of Sociomedical Sciences and departments in other Columbia schools including the Department of Psychiatry, the Law School, and the School of Social Work.
