Yusuf Hamied Distinguished Lecture

The annual Yusuf Hamied Distinguished Lectures – one in Mumbai and one in New York City – honor outstanding individuals whose work has advanced our understanding of global health challenges. We thank Dr. Yusuf K. Hamied for his generosity in establishing this distinguished lecture series, which enables our institution to strengthen and build academic relationships with the public health research community in India, in collaboration with our partner, the Columbia Global Centers | Mumbai.

Dr. Hamied’s accomplishments, exemplified by his extraordinary efforts focused on eradicating the HIV/AIDS epidemic, have profoundly benefitted the public’s health and established many of our 21st century models for a healthier population. Both a world-renowned scientist and chairman of Cipla, a global pharmaceuticals company that was built with local, indigenous investment and enterprise in India modeled on making the global South self-reliant in its need vital drugs, Dr. Hamied has spent much of his career working to ensure equitable access to generic AIDS drugs and other life-saving medications, regardless of patients’ ability to pay. In addition, Dr. Hamied was influential in pioneering the development of multi-drug combination pills for HIV/AIDS, TB, and other ailments.

In addition to this Distinguished Lecture series, Dr. Hamied’s generosity has made possible the Yusuf Hamied Faculty Fellowship Program
